WITH LOVE AND ATTENTION | CARISSA MOORE
Earlier this year, our FEB ISSUE #86 was covered by Team USA Olympic Gold Medalist and 5X Women's World Surf League Champion, Carissa Moore! Since we spoke to her, she's halfway through the season and at the time of the release of this issue is #2 in the World Surf League, won the Billabong Pro Pipeline as well as most recently, winning the Margaret River Pro in late April!
She is a force on the water and we also enjoy how she gives back to women by empowering them to be who they want to be as they navigate their lives and take on wherever their goals lead them! In the midst of training and making her own goals, we caught up with her to find out about her recent win, the second half of the season and her latest collaboration with Hurley for her May Moore Aloha collection by Hurley.
ATHLEISURE MAG: What did your recent win at Margaret River mean to you?
CARISSA MOORE: It was a very validating and empowering win. It had come after a string of average results that had me questioning my process and formula. I feel like things start to fall into place when I reconnect with what’s most meaningful to me and let go of everyone else’s expectations. It’s very easy to get distracted on the journey and this win was a nice reminder to trust in my preparation, process and believe in my purpose. I love Margaret River and winning with my team there made it really special.
AM: Why do you enjoy being at Margaret River?
CM: It feels like things are more simple in Margaret River. There isn’t a lot of fuss, bells and whistles. People are kind, the towns are small and there is a ton of open space. The nature is raw, the waves are wild, you can still find an empty beach or watch the sunset all by yourself. That is rare. It is a place that brings you back to yourself and the present moment.
AM: What tournaments are you looking forward to this year?
CM: The second half of the WSL Championship Tour season, I am truly looking foward to all of the events but especially Teahupo’o, Tahiti (SHISEIDO Tahiti Pro).
AM: What’s your routine on the morning of your competition?
CM: I wake up around 5am, kiss my husband good morning, make myself a warm drink, activate my body for about 45 mins and then head to the beach for a surf before the first horn blows usually around 8am.
AM: When you finish competing, how do you switch gears into relaxing mode?
CM: I like to relax after competing by taking a hot shower, eating a healthy meal, going for a nice beach walk, reading a book, journaling or putting on a good tv show.
AM: Tell us about your May Moore Aloha collection by Hurley!
CM: This Moore Aloha X Hurley collection is my favorite one yet! Created from start to finish with love and attention to all the details, this collection celebrates Hawaii, femininity and combined woman power. So grateful for the opportunity to work closely with local Hawaiian artist, Aloha de Mele, on all the prints and the incredible team at Hurley Women to create a line that combines function with fashion. It is my goal with every collection to create pieces that spark joy, empower females to feel comfortable and confident while chasing their dreams. To add, one of the things I’m most excited about is this is the first of our collections available in girl sizes!
AM: What does it feel like for your collaboration between Moore Aloha and Hurley to come together like it has?
CM: It is so cool to see my favorite pieces come to life, displayed at my hometown stores and being worn!
AM: What is your process of designing your collection?
CM: I’ll start by sending the Hurley Women’s team “inspo” pics and they’ll create a mood board, pick a variety of prints and colors for me to choose from. Once we nail that down, they’ll create a line up of silhouettes for me to look at. There is a bit of back and forth refining the selection and giving feedback. Then, they will make samples and I get to product test! I’ll send some suggestions until we get the fits just right.
AM: Tell us about your next Moore Aloha event.
CM: I am planning the next Moore Aloha event for this fall on the island of Oahu. Our work focuses on Mental Health, Education, Community Relations, Culture, and Environmental Conservation. Our main goal is to share valuable tools and resources with girls and women to create a positive life driven by passion, fueled by purpose. We integrate the Hawaiian culture to promote mindfulness and community. The ocean and surfing is a tool to empower girls to step outside their comfort zone and live fearlessly. Our welcoming atmosphere allows for open, honest conversation and soulful connections. Some of the activities we include are a tag team event, lei making, yoga, journaling, hula, a beach clean up and surfing. Depending on our group and our focus we will sometimes include a goal setting workshop, CPR and water safety courses, work in the lo’i (taro patches), plant trees, and invite other empowering females to talk and share their inspirational stories.

SERVING UP SELF-CARE | SLOANE STEPHENS
As we close out 2022, we're already thinking about what we're going to do in the New Year personally and professionally! In the midst of all this activity, we need to take time and to enjoy the moments along the way!
This month's cover is Grand Slam US Open 2017 Champion, Sloane Stephens. She has made impressive moments at the French Open, Australian Open, Wimbledon and a number of matches and won an ESPY for Top Female Tennis Player in 2018 and because of her philanthropic work with the Sloane Stephens Foundation, she was nominated and a finalist for the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award in 2019.
We have had the pleasure to connect with her in previous issues, but this month, we're talking about her upcoming tennis season, self-care and what she does while traveling! She definitely knows a thing or two about juggling a busy schedule while also taking the necessary time that she needs.
ATHLEISURE MAG: We had the pleasure of interviewing a few years back and then right before the US Open, you took time out of your schedule to share your 63MIX ROUTIN3S with us about what you do Morning, Afternoon and Night. With the season starting Jan 1st, what are the weeks like for you between now and the start of the season whether it’s training, relaxing, enjoying the holiday season, etc?
SLOANE STEPHENS: I’ve had one of the best off-seasons I’ve ever had this year! I started out by freezing my eggs at Kindbody. I’ve wanted to freeze my eggs for a while and the timing was finally right to commit to the process. From there, we went to Iceland to celebrate Jozy’s birthday and spent a few days as a family at the Retreat Hotel at the Blue Lagoon getting spa treatments and soaking in the hot springs. Iceland is only a 5 hour nonstop flight from Boston, so it was an easy trip! The day after Thanksgiving, we left for Africa. We went on the most incredible safari in South Africa at Londolozi and saw a gorilla trek at Virunga National Park. This was my first trip to Africa and I cannot wait to go back. I’m now back in Boston doing a training block with my trainer before heading for a tennis training block in Cabo through Christmas. From Cabo, I’ll fly directly to Auckland, NZ to begin the season!
AM: What tournaments are you looking forward to this year?
SS: Red clay is my favorite surface, so I always look forward to the European clay court season in the spring, which culminates at Roland Garros. As an American, any time I can play on US soil is extra special, so I’m looking forward to playing at Indian Wells, Miami, the US Open, and a new tournament in Austin.
AM: What is your routine before and after your matches?
SS: Before I play, I usually eat some pasta and a piece of lean protein like a chicken breast or piece of fish. I typically go into the locker room and put my headphones in and spend some time thinking and mentally going over the match plan I outlined with my coach the night before. About 30 minutes before my match, I’ll break a light sweat on a stationary bike and go through some fitness drills to make sure I’m starting the match with quick feet and dynamic movement.
After the match, I’ll do a quick cool down and shower before handling any mandatory media commitments. Once I’m done with that, I’ll either get a massage on-site or go back to my hotel and get some treatment from my physio. Depending on the time of day, I’ll then head out to dinner and prepare for the next day.
AM: How important is recovery to you after working out or after a match? What are the kinds of things that you do after these activities?
SS: Recovery is a critical piece of both the fitness and recovery process. Cooling down and taking the time to stretch and flush out muscles is really important for recovery and preparing for the next day and next match.
AM: Many of our readers are balancing hectic schedules – you got married at the top of the year to Jozy Altidore, an international soccer star – how do you make sure you give time to yourself, being with your husband and family?
SS: I make a lot of effort to have a very structured schedule and communicate my boundaries and commitments to my team. When it’s family time, it is family time and the phone is away. When it’s time to train, I’m training. When it’s time to work on my Foundation or on my outside businesses and investments, I’m fully there. I’ve also learned the things that bring me the most joy and fulfillment and prioritize those activities. When I’m home and able to spend time with my family, I take advantage of every single second of that time we’re together.
AM: In your sport, you spend a lot of time traveling 40+ weeks of the year! You kick off the season in Australia with the Australian Open. Also via your IG feed, you travel for fun – you’re South African trip looks amazing! How do you make your spaces feel like home when you’re traveling?
SS: I try to keep some consistent products and activities in my routine so that I can rely on those consistencies no matter where I am. A super easy way to do this is with bringing a candle from home - I find that having the same scent is really grounding and helps me feel in control of my environment.
AM: When it comes to choosing what hotel you like to stay at and to help our readers that may be planning their next trip, what are the things that you look for?
SS: For most tournaments, there is an official tournament hotel, so I just stay wherever I need to. In some cases, like in Paris and New York where there are endless options, we get to pick our own hotels. I love to stay at The Langham in New York and Hotel Vernet in Paris. I love when a hotel has a good breakfast, it’s just one less decision to make in the day. I also love great showers and friendly concierges.
AM: In terms of your suitcase, what are some of the important things that are must for you to pack so that you have your necessities as well as options for the unexpected?
SS: The most important thing in my suitcase is my passport. If I have my passport, I can pretty much figure everything else out as I go! Of course, I also need my tennis racquets to do my job! I travel with a lot of skin care products because I love the sense of calm and order that a consistent routine brings.
AM: What are some of your travel hacks that have proven to work for you that we should know?
SS: I cannot overstate the importance of hydrating during travel. The entire travel experience is really drying - the plane air is dry, hotels can be dry, the change in climates can be tough - it’s a lot. Hydrating inside and out helps your body adjust to new situations and new timezones and it is so simple to do. I think a lot of people are hit with a double-whammy when it comes to dehydration because they’re drinking a lot of caffeine to try and stay awake during travel or they might be having some alcoholic beverages while they’re away, and both of those things are also really dehydrating on the body, so it’s all the more important to hydrate.
AM: Do you have anything that you do before, during or after hopping on a flight whether it’s a beauty process, self-care, etc?
SS: I’ve started wearing WHOOP’s new Blue Light Glasses to avoid disrupting my circadian rhythms with too much screen time - it makes a huge difference when I’m trying to sleep the next night. I also try to get up and walk around on the plane to keep the blood flowing and prevent blood clots or feeling super stiff when I land.
AM: When you arrive in your designated city, whether it’s for work or fun, what are the things that you look for in terms of restaurants, activities and shopping that you want to explore?
SS: When I was first starting out on tour, I rarely ventured out. I stuck close to the hotel and always went back to the same restaurants. There are already so many variables at play when traveling for work and needing to compete, so I never wanted to risk an upset stomach or having any sort of issues. Now that I’ve been traveling to the same cities for 15+ years, I have a great mix of my tried and true staple spots but have also really enjoyed researching and trying new spots. I think being locked down during Covid made me appreciate the incredible opportunity I have to travel the world and made me look forward to getting back out and exploring.
AM: Do you have separate beauty routines for daytime versus night time?
SS: Yes! I wake up and drink a huge glass of water. I brush my teeth and then wash my face with a gentle cleanser like the iS Clinical Cleansing Complex. I sleep with various moisturizing layers, so I don’t want to take that all off and dry myself out again. I usually head right to practice or training, so I put Neutrogena sunscreen on my face and sometimes I’ll use the Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Pollution Drops under my sunscreen. I sweat pretty much every day and am always wearing sunscreen, so I like to do a body scrub in the shower at night to scrub that all away and feel like I’m going to bed super clean. For the record, I love piping hot showers, the hottest the dial will turn - boil me!! After I get out of the shower, I layer on the moisturizers - I start with a lotion and then will layer a body oil on top if I’m feeling extra ashy in certain spots. I go through the same routine every day and it helps my body and mind recognize that it is time to start unwinding and preparing for bed. None of the products I use at night have any energizing scents like eucalyptus or lemon verbena - it’s all fragrance free. If I want a relaxing scent, I’ll turn on a diffuser or light a candle. I always travel with diffusers or candles.
AM: How important is mental health and self-care to your training and state of being whether you’re working in your sport or just being out and about?
SS: There is an undeniable link between mental health and physical well-being. Both parts have to be working in harmony. Tennis as a sport inherently requires a lot of mental energy - it’s just you out there and everyone is looking at you, so I find that taking care of my mental health is just as important as how I take care of my body. It is encouraging to see this sort of discourse make its way into more mainstream conversations and I hope that more people are encouraged to find the practices, tools, and therapies that help them.
AM: Why does the wellness space mean so much to you and what can you tell us about your new brand that you are launching next year as we know you may not be able to say too much!
SS: The wellness space is so important to me as both an athlete and as a woman. I've always loved to try new products and am constantly in pursuit of the best ways to take care of my skin and body. I will be venturing into the wellness space myself next year, so stay tuned!
AM: We know how important The Sloane Stephens Foundation is to you. Are there new projects or initiatives that you are focused on that you would like to share?
SS: Thank you for asking! The Sloane Stephens Foundation is actually celebrating our 10 year anniversary in March 2023 - I cannot believe it’s been 10 years! I wanted to use tennis as the vehicle to keep kids in school, keep them healthy, and keep them physically safe. Tennis has given me so much in my life but I know that it can feel very unapproachable, especially to people from under-resourced communities who might not be able to afford the equipment or coaching, or to underrepresented communities where they might not see a lot of players that look like them. I sought out to change that. We work with over 15,000 kids each year across the Compton Unified School District and provide tennis, academic, mental health, and financial literacy programs. One of the things I’m most proud of us that almost all of our coaches are actually graduates of our programs who have decided to come on as staff members while they pursue their college degrees. It’s very much a big family and it feels very sustainable to have programs designed and implemented by the community and for the community.

IMPACT THE GAME | DARIUS LEONARD
We're kicking off the year with our 73rd cover, 3 X Consecutive Pro-Bowler Darius Leonard of the Indianapolis Colts. Known as The Maniac on the field for his energy and the ability to make productive plays, he is also known for his commitment to giving back.
We caught up with Darius days before the Pro-Bowl for his virtual shoot as well as to find out more about playing for the Colts, being in this season's Hard Knocks on HBO and The Maniac Foundation.
ATHLEISURE MAG: When did you fall in love with football and what was the moment that you knew you wanted to play professionally?
DARIUS LEONARD: Started playing football at the age of 8. Fell In love with the game at age 14. Didn’t think about playing professional football until about my junior year of college and that’s when I started thinking about the NFL and that I could possibly have a chance.
AM: You were drafted in 2018 – what was that process like for you and what has it mean to play for the Indianapolis Colts?
DL: Draft process was tough coming from a small college. I had lot of visits and people flying me out to make sure I was who I was. Had to play senior ball then after Senior Bowl I popped my quad running the 40 at the combine and after that I thought my draft stat would fall and then fortunately I was drafted by the Colts and that means a lot being drafted by a team that is known for championships and that’s been my mentality to be a winner and that’s why I am happy to be a Colt.
AM: How did you get the nickname, The Maniac?
DL: Energetic and productive playing.
AM: When you’re in the season, what’s a week like for you from working out, practicing etc and how does this differ in the off season?
DL: During the season my week is pretty tough. After game Sunday I get in the hyperbaric chamber and spend some time with the family. Monday is a lot of body work and massages and hyperbaric chamber and ankle work. And then Tuesday I start watching a little bit of tape and a little body work and get in hot and cold tubs. Wednesday and Thursdays wake up at 6am get home around 7/8pm. Friday is a big work day for body work. Then Saturday is relaxation day and Sunday is game day.
AM: When you’re hitting the gym, what workouts do you do that allow you to optimize your sport?
DL: When I hit the gym I do a lot more of the explosive stuff. Continue to make sure I have that quick twitch, a lot of squats & snatches. Making sure I am hitting the field pretty heavy making sure my feet and hand placements are good. Make sure I am doing good at my drills that I gotta do when the game is coming.
AM: This season was a great one to watch and it was nice to also have the team on HBO’s Hard Knocks In Season so that we got an inside look on what you and the team do on and off the field. It’s one of my favorite shows that lets us see the practice and camaraderie you have with one another as well as the friend and family support that exists. What was it like being on this season and being able to share more about you and your family with the fans?
DL: Hard knocks was great being there. It was fun having them get our back story of who we are as players and human beings. Fun having my family and seeing their reactions during the games and stuff like that because those are things that I never get to see so it was fun to have hard knocks there to make that visible for us since I never get to see it.
AM: Although you won't be heading to the Super Bowl, the Colts are sending the most players to this year’s Pro Bowl and you will be returning for a 3rd consecutive time. How have you been preparing heading into the Pro Bowl and how do you train and get in sync with fellow teammates that you are not used to playing with?
DL: You know for Pro Bowl I don’t do too much for it. I just make sure I am staying in shape, and make sure my lungs are good so if it’s a long drive I am ready for that. Its all about trust, you get the playbook, and you just trust the guys to be professionals and know they are going to do their job and I am going to do my job. Everybody do their 111 just to make their play work. Looking forward to the Pro Bowl and looking forward to playing with teammates I have never played with before.
AM: How do you take time for yourself?
DL: Off the field I really don’t take too much time for myself. If I’m home with the girls or at a high school doing community service to be a positive role model on these kids lives and try to find a way to give back as much as I can – that’s what I like to do in my free time. I want to be the spotlight for these little kids and try to make a way for them and let them understand that you can be someone and it don’t have to be football related and make sure they know there are multiple ways to get out there and make an impact and that’s what I like to do to help kids as much as I possibly can and be their role model.
AM: When you’re in Indianapolis, where can we find you enjoying a date night?
DL: In Indianapolis, if I am on date night and out and about I am definitely going to Hyde Park and getting their fried lobsters and I am getting their crab cake, their steak, potatoes, and my wife is definitely going to get her asparagus and that’s about it!
AM: Last year you launched the Maniac Foundation which supports those in Indianapolis and Lake View communities in South Carolina - can you tell us more about your organization?
DL: The Maniac Foundation was launched March 2, 2021. The foundation is dedicated to transforming communities through education, wellness, serving families in need and other charitable causes. The foundation has provided over 100 bikes to children in foster care, books and backpacks for students, winter coats, holiday gifts and over $25,000 in charitable grants.
AM: What can we expect to see from you and the Maniac Foundation this year?
DL: The Maniac Foundation is refurbishing a park in Lake View. Hilltop Park will be receiving a makeover complete with a new playground and new basketball goals. We are partnering with the Indianapolis Public Schools District, Lake View Elementary and Lake View High School to kick off the Mind of Maniacs Reading program (kids are required to read 10 books) and the Math Maniacs Math Program. High performing students will have the opportunity to attend an Indianapolis Colts home game. We are having a big volunteer event at Midwest Food Bank in Indy to help pack food boxes for those in need. Starting this spring I will record monthly messages directed towards individuals working on their mental health.

LET IT FLOW WITH CORY JUNEAU
We love the fact that in many ways, the Olympics highlight athletes on a global stage so that you can know more about them and can continue to watch them throughout the year as they do a range of exhilarating and heroic competitions. The Summer Games in Tokyo introduced the debut of skateboarding with Team USA's Olympic Skateboarding Men's Park Team was comprised of Heimana Reynolds (our June cover), Zion Wright (this month's 9LIST STORI3S) and this month's cover, Cory Juneau who won the Bronze medal. These 3 represented the entire Park USA Skateboarding team!
We caught up with Cory to talk about his approach to the sport and how in addition to it being his job, it's a passion and something he truly enjoys! He talks about how the sport authentically creates a culture of positivity where they hype each other up. We also talk about his upcoming schedule which includes the Copenhagen Pro as well as the Venice International Film Festival with Golden Goose who he is sponsored by.
ATHLEISURE MAG: When was the moment that you fell in love with skateboarding?
CORY JUNEAU: Probably the first time that I got on my board. I saw my brother get a skateboard and he started skating and I kind of just got one right after and so that was it!
AM: When did you realize that you wanted to go pro and do it as a living?
CJ: That’s never really been a huge thought of mine! It’s just been about going out and having fun and skating with my friends, which has always been my motivator and I always just want to do whatever I can to be able to continue to skate for the rest of my life. I push myself to be able to do better and it’s not about being any type of typical thing that people would assume.
AM: How do you approach skating? Do you have a process when it comes to tricks that you want to incorporate into the runs that you want to do?
CJ: My process is kind of me getting there and just figuring it out when I’m skating and I want to be comfortable. I have been skating for awhile now and skating is 90% mental. If you’re confident and you know what you want to do, it will work out you know? I just like to take it slow.
AM: We love that you have a very chill and relaxed style!
CJ: Haha thank you, thank you!
AM: So what’s a day like with you when you’re practicing?
CJ: A typical day for me is pretty chill honestly! I kind of just wake up and see what the homies are doing and then make a plan to go skate somewhere – if it’s in the street or in the park or some spot. We’ll just figure it out at the time. We just kind of get a group together of all the homies and we just go, skate and vibe off of each other.
AM: When it comes to working out, what do you do that allows you to optimize you in your sport or do you simply skate?
CJ: I usually just skate, but I just started doing yoga and PT because I was battling an injury in Jan. So, I kind of got into a routine. So I have been doing yoga twice a week and PT twice a week for my ankle. My body is healthy, strong and flexible. I think its great to do this to just keep it that way and to prevent injuries.
AM: What’s a typical skateboarding season like for you? I know that pre-COVID it was probably different and now things may still be a bit different, but what’s a season like in terms of competitions and how many months out of the year are you doing this?
CJ: Honestly, the skate competition season is pretty hectic. There's a lot of travel and I'm probably gone 6-8 months out of the year normally. Like you said, it’s been pretty chill the last year and a half because of COVID, but before that, it was pretty hectic and I was always traveling, always doing stuff and trying to get there and to stay on top of it.
AM: Because you travel so much around the world, do you have a favorite series that you like to compete in?
CJ: My favorite series are the ones that are not so oriented around the contests, but it’s about having a good time. A lot of the skate events are set up on the beach and have that Venice type vibe. I’m a big fan of Australia, it’s one of my favorite places and it reminds me of home. I used to enjoy going out there a lot, but there hasn’t been a series out there for a few years! But I’m missing it and I’m itching to go back.
AM: When it’s game time for you, do you have a routine or series of things that you do before you go into a competition – are you doing extra yoga?
CJ: It’s pretty mellow honestly. I just like to get a visual of what I want to do and get my line down and then I like to get it all down in one run. I just want to make it happen, you know? Like I said before, skating is 90% mental. It’s just knowing that you can do it. I just like to stay relaxed because what’s going to happen is going to happen.
AM: It’s a great mindset to have!
CJ: Yeah! I think it works really well for me and it keeps me relaxed.
AM: Before we get into talking about you competing in the Olympics, just the idea that you were part of the inaugural group of people that had your sport on such a global stage – how big was it for you to be in that group and to also have your sport represented like that?
CJ: It was huge! It’s such a surreal feeling to having everybody around you being so supportive and having your back. For me, I didn’t realize how crazy it was going to be and how much backing there is. I mean, obviously, I have watched a few Olympic events, but it’s something you can’t take in until you’re there and you see it for yourself. To go out there to support my city, Southern California, California as a whole and the US is huge and super humbling. To go out there and do well, it was great!
AM: We were excited to watch skateboarding and to see the preliminaries as well as the finals! How did you feel winning the Bronze medal?
CJ: It was so surreal and honestly, it’s been 2 weeks and I’m still taking it in! Because, it’s been such a long build up, like such a long journey and road to just get there. I changed my diet, I started doing yoga, PT, I was battling an injury for 4 or 5 months and I’m just grateful that I was able to make it there and do well. Coming from the US, we have the largest skate scene in the world and the fact that I was able to make it there, I was blown away. I wasn’t so stressed about the results, I was just glad that I was there.
AM: Is there a difference between competing at the Olympics versus your other tournaments in terms of game play?
CJ: I don’t think that the judging is any different. What everyone is doing out there is so authentic and so original and themselves – you can only be judged against yourself.
AM: One of the things that struck us when we were watching especially in seeing the prelims and then the finals, as a community, to watch all of you hyping each other up – it was like a party that you wanted to be invited to. What is it about the skateboarding culture that creates this kind of camaraderie? What are you guys doing that fosters that feeling?
CJ: Yeah, the camaraderie between us is truly one of a kind! I think it’s just that we're all so passionate and we all love skateboarding so much and it’s so authentically ourselves. It’s not like anyone else out there is doing the exact same thing. So you get hyped up when someone does their run and does good. So we feed off that and we take that energy and we put it into our skating. It’s not like someone does a good run and it scares you! When you do it and love it, it’s a good session! You vibe off of that good energy in the air.
AM: Looking at the Summer Games in Paris 2024, do you anticipate adding that to your plans?
CJ: It’s something that I would like to do. It’s a few years away, but everything will come down again soon and when it starts up, I will definitely try to make the cut! I’d love to go back. The experience that I had was so surreal like I said and I’d love to go and do it again.
AM: What’s the next tournament that you’re going to be in?
CJ: Yeah, I’m actually leaving the 31st of this month to go to Copenhagen for the Copenhagen Pro. It’s not a serious competition but it’s where we can get together with tons of skaters who meet up and there’s spots all over the city where you can go from place to place to skate. It’s a lot of fun! I’ll be out there for a week and then I’m flying from there to Italy and I’m meeting up with a lot of the Golden Goose team as we have a little event out there that I’m excited for. It’s great to be able to start some traveling and to have some fun and to relax a little bit.
AM: How would you define your personal style? We heard that you like to collect gold chains – what do you look for when it comes to adding them into your assortment?
CJ: I wouldn’t say that it’s a collection, I would say that I have a style of chain that I wear and I lost a bunch ha! So when I lose them, I go find another one! My dad gave me his when I was a kid and then I lost it so I have always been attached to that style I guess. They don’t really make that style of chain anymore because it’s pretty fragile – when you bend it, it will break.
AM: How did the partnership between you and Golden Goose come together? You wore a custom style at the Olympics while you competed. What is it that you love about the brand and why did you partner with one another?
CJ: I’ve actually been a fan of Golden Goose for years. I love their sneaker brand and I used to ride for a couple of other shoe companies, but it was never the style that fit me the best. I just love the distressed and authentic look to them. There’s nothing like them and they’re good forever. They don’t get dirty in a way. My partnership came together all in good time! I spoke to my manager and asked him to reach out and we were in talks back and forth for about a year and a half and it’s been coming together for awhile.
It came down to timing. Skateboarding has a huge influence on the fashion community and now we’re getting a lot of recognition because of the Olympics and I think that these companies are putting more thought into it and seeing that they need to support this.
AM: It was interesting to hear that you designed the shoes that you got to compete in for the Olympics. There’s something about taking a brand that is known for their aesthetic and adding in elements that you like personally or that optimizes you for your sport. What was it like for you to do that?
CJ: Working with them has been super fun and everyone there is super family oriented. They are focused on making the best shoes that they can. They really care about it just like I do. It was great. I kind of pitched them ideas and they were cool with everything I had to say. I didn’t really design a new shoe, I recreated the Ball Star that they already had, for skateboarding.
We went through different materials and compounds for the rubber and suede on the side. We looked at the stitching so it wouldn’t rip and would be more durable for skateboarding. It was great and everyone there was so great to be with.
AM: Do you envision being able to do more with them whether it’s a collab line or something along those lines?
CJ: I hope so! I want to work on a collection with them! I always want to expand what I am doing to grow and this is the perfect place for me to do that. They obviously want to do that too which is really great. We’ll see what happens.
AM: Tell us about From Venice to Venice. You’ll be debuting this at the Venice Film Festival which sounds awesome and you will be performing. So what is the film and how excited are you to be part of this?
CJ: It’s huge and I’m super excited. From Venice to Venice is like a 3 part series that we’ve done where a lot of Golden Goose’s style is taken from Venice’s, Southern California style, vibes and community. They get a lot of inspiration from there. I’m from San Diego, but Venice has a huge impact on all of us. This is like a 3 video series that has an in the life kind of vibe from Venice, California, then on the road to the Olympics and then the final one in Venice, Italy. So it should be fun. I’m excited for everything that they have going on out there. It will be a video on it, but stay tuned!
AM: When you’re not skateboarding, are there additional sports that we would find you doing?
CJ: Yeah – I enjoy everything with my friends! We go out and play basketball, soccer, we go to the beach, we play some pool – you name it! We’re all just a hands on friend group. Whenever we’re doing something, we’re just having fun with it.
AM: How do you take time for yourself?
CJ: Skateboarding is my job, but it’s also what I love! I never think that I’m waking up going to work, I’m waking up doing what I want. We all need some me time. It’s all free time for me! Me talking with you right now was all that was on my list to do today.
AM: What do you want your legacy to be in terms of your impact on the sport?
CJ: That’s a great question and I’ve never thought about that. I’ve just gone out and had fun. I want people to know that when you’re going out, you need to make sure that you’re having fun. You need to take it one step at a time! The community of skateboarding is so small and there is so much love in it. You go to the park and you just start talking to people because everyone wants to mingle and talk to one another and support one another. It allows you to go to the park and to just try something. They’re rooting you on. It’s tough because it can be hard on your body and on your mind when you’re trying over and over again. But you just have to get back up, be patient and try again. But make sure you are enjoying it and everything will come.
AM: We always like to ask our trailblazers, people who are killing it who others look up to – who are 3 people whether you know them or don’t that have inspired you to be where you are today?
CJ: I grew up watching all of the Rocky movies and I know they’re not real – but I’m a fan of Rocky! Mike Tyson, Kobe Bryant - I have had a lot of influences from people that push hard and are determined. That’s what motivates me – people who push hard enough to get what they want.

MELLABRATION TIME WITH LEAH VAN DALE
This September, our cover is graced by Leah Van Dale who wrestles under the name Carmella as a WWE SuperStar who is also on E! Total Divas, which is back for its 9th season on Oct 1st! Our shoot took place during NYFW, which showcased SS20 collections that we can't wait to start rocking in a few months. Our shoot took place at The Mondrian Park Ave Hotel on the Mondrian Terrace as well as at their lower level lounge known as The Boogie Room.
As we showcased great transitional fall looks, we also got to know more about this athlete, whose career has included being a dancer for the New England Patriots as well as the LA Lakers as a Laker Girl and of course being a WWE SuperStar. In addition, she also launched her own wine label that embodies her mantra and how she sees the world as she continues to amass her empire.
ATHLEISURE MAG: You have had an amazing career, that has included cheerleading, dancing, modeling, wrestler and entrepreneur. When you were growing up, what was the moment that you realized that you wanted to be an entertainer?
LEAH VAN DALE: For as long as I can remember. I was dancing before I could even walk. It’s where I feel the most comfortable. I’ve always loved putting on a show!
AM: Earlier this year, our Feb cover included a few members of the Super Bowl Champions’ New England Patriots, what was your journey to becoming a cheerleader for this team for 3 seasons?
LVD: I danced my entire life. When I started college I knew I wanted to continue my passion for dancing. I found out about a try out to become a New England Patriots Cheerleader. I went to the try out and made it! The rest was really history.
AM: After 3 seasons with the New England Patriots, you became a Laker Girl for the Los Angeles Lakers for a season, what was that process like?
LVD: At the time, you could only cheer for the Patriots for three seasons. I had just graduated college in May of 2010 and I was ready for a change. I flew out to LA the day before the tryout. There were almost 700 girls there for the audition and only 6 spots open on the team. I felt so out of my element. I kept making it to the next round and after almost two months of tryouts and training I made the team! I picked up and moved to LA without knowing anyone or anything about the city, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing about it.
AM: As someone who was familiar with the WWE as your father Paul Van Dale is a mixed martial artist and worked with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in the 80s and 90s – when did you decide that you wanted to be in the WWE?
LVD: Honestly, I never thought I would end up in the WWE. I used to watch it when I was a kid, but it wasn’t something I aspired to do. I wanted to be a dancer. My dad would bring it up from time to time but I always shut the idea down. When I did everything I could with dance I found out about a tryout with WWE. The timing was perfect. All the stars aligned and my journey to become Women’s Champion began.
AM: Tell us about your journey for becoming a part of the WWE?
LVD: I moved to Orlando in 2013 when I was signed to WWE’s developmental brand NXT. I trained at the Performance Center for a little over two years; learned the basics in wrestling and created my Carmella character. In 2016, I was drafted to Smackdown Live and I’ve been moon walking and trashing all over TV since.
AM: Your ring name is Carmella, why did you choose that name and what is the persona of her when you're wrestling – how does this differ from you?
LVD: I wanted an Italian mob-wife character. I channeled my inner Carmella Soprano. I wore fur jackets and talked with an accent. We already had a girl on the roster billed from Boston (where I’m from) so they decided to bill me from Staten Island (which is my real life rival!! A New Englander pretending to be from New York?!?!) I did all the studying I could do to make sure I really gave off the Staten Island vibes and I pride myself on my character. She’s definitely more outspoken than Leah. But it’s essentially me with the volume turned up to 100!
AM: What is the process like when you are creating your ring persona and do you have input when it comes to the storylines that you are involved in?
LVD: I had all of the way in creating Carmella. She’s definitely evolved over the years, but I feel lucky that the first character I came up with is still what I’m doing today. Some people go years trying to create their on screen persona, so I’m very fortunate.
AM: You have had a number of amazing wins in your career at the WWE, what are 3 of your favorite storylines that you have been involved in?
LVD: I loved my story with Nikki Bella when I first debuted on Smackdown Live. It was my first feud and it was super high profile. I was so nervous to work with her, but she was incredible. She always had my back. I loved when I became Miss Money in the Bank. I made history in the first ever women’s MITB ladder match. I got to carry that contract and be so incredibly obnoxious about it. Of course my final favorite is when I cashed in on Charlotte Flair the Smackdown after Wrestlemania 34. I was an over the top champion with these ridiculous Mellabrations. It was so fun.
AM: Who do you consider as members of your squad within the WWE?
LVD: I have a good group of girls I’m close with. Bayley is one of my best friends. We got super close during our time in NXT and we’ve remained that way despite being on different brands the last few years. Natalya is my girl. We text literally every single day. She’s so funny. I love Sonya and Mandy as well. We all lived in Fort Lauderdale for the last year and they’re just super fun.
AM: As an athlete in the WWE, what does it mean to you to be in this organization as well as being apart of a number of the amazing things taking place within the women’s matches that take place there?
LVD: This is the best time to be a lady wrestler. I feel so fortunate to be a part of so many historical moments. These are the times everyone will be talking about when it comes to the Women’s Evolution.
AM: Fitness has been a key component of your career and you have even been in videos with Bob Harper, why is it so integral to you?
LVD: Fitness has been an important part of my life since I was a kid. My parents have always instilled that into my sister and me. When I’m active and eating healthy is when I feel my best. Of course we all fall off the wagon every now and then, but I always get back to it.
AM: What is a typical day like for you when you’re working out?
LVD: When I’m at home (which is RARE!) I train with my trainer or I do yoga. On the road I do empty stomach cardio in the morning, either 30 min on the stationary bike or walk on the treadmill on a high incline. Then I do some weight training. I alternate upper and lower body workouts.
AM: You were wrestling at Madison Square Garden earlier this month, what is your day like going into a day like that?
LVD: Usually it’s a workout in the morning then I just head to the arena for 2pm. Just to walk into MSG is mind blowing, nevermind knowing I get to perform there. It’s every entertainer's dream. This was my third time there. It never gets old!
AM: You’re constantly on the move, what is the average week like for you between taping shows, being in the ring and more?
LVD: It varies from week to week, but typically something like this:
Saturday fly from home to the first city, have the show, the drive to the next town. Have a show on Sunday, then drive to the next town. After our show on Monday, I drive to wherever we have our live tv show Smackdown Live that week. Of course the gym and finding healthy spots to eat inbetween all of that. When we’re filming for Total Divas, I would fly to wherever we are filming that Wednesday morning after TV. We film Wednesday-Friday then fly to the next set of shows on Saturday. When we aren’t filming, I sometimes get to go home Wednesday-Friday, in between show loops.
AM: Season 9 of E! Total Divas premiers on Oct 2nd – why do you like being a part of this show and how important is it to be involved so that we can know more about you as well as your character?
LVD: I was on the show for season 7, but I didn’t get the opportunity to really open up and show my truth. I’m excited to do that this time around.
Nothing is off-limits, which scares me a little. It’s very nerve-wracking to put your entire personal life out there for everyone to judge, but I’m ready!
AM: What can you tell us about your upcoming season?
LVD: It’s all about our sisterhood. There’s six of us: Ronda Rousey, Nattie, Sonya Deville, Trinity and Nia Jax. You’ll get to see my relationship with my boyfriend Corey Graves and of course there’s a little drama with the girls.
AM: Tell us about Capo Cagna Wine – how did this opportunity come about, how long were you in development, what is the meaning behind the name and where can people get it?
LVD: It’s been in the works for well over a year now. It’s been such a long process with a lot of ups and downs. I wanted to start a brand and have it mean something. I want everyone to feel like a Boss Bitch when they’re drinking it, which is was Capo Cagna means in Italian.
AM: Wine is a beverage that a number of people enjoy or are just learning about, we love how you position your wine regardless of the sippers’ wine background – why is that your approach?
LVD: I think it’s important to feel confident. I want whoever grabs the bottle of wine to know they deserve to feel a little boujie, but it’s not going to break the bank. It’s all about being boujie on a budget. So if you’re a wine snob, this is not the wine for you! ;)
AM: Currently, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are available, will there be additional varietals that we should keep an eye out for?
LVD: Yes! We will have a Rosé launching for the summer of 2020.
AM: On average, how many times a year are you traveling?
LVD: 52 weeks a year. We don’t have an off season.
AM: As someone who travels quite frequently, what are 3 things that are in your carryon that make you feel like you’re at home?
LVD: I always keep one of my comfy sweaters in my backpack so I pull that out for the plane ride; my eye mask and my iPad so I can keep up on all of my favorite reality shows (Real Housewives is my guilty pleasure.)
AM: Do you have any philanthropies or charitable work that you are a part of that you can share with us?
LVD: With WWE we are always involved with so many charitable organizations. A few that I work closely with are The Boys and Girls Club, Be a Star (WWE's anti-bullying campaign) and UNICEF Kid Power.
AM: When you have downtime, what are 3 things that we could find you doing or eating when you’re taking time for yourself?
LVD: You will find me drinking wine on my couch, eating sushi or pizza and watching Netflix.
AM: In Ft. Lauderdale, where can we find you grabbing a drink/meal, working out and shopping?
LVD: When I’m home, I’m usually a homebody. But I do work with my trainer Danny Blanco at Top Notch Training. Other than that, I’m ordering Uber Eats and laying low!
AM: What are 3 brand/products that you’re loving within each of these three categories of - fitness, beauty and in style?
LVD: I’m all about skin care products. I love using rose water to spray on my face when I travel. Rosehip oil is essential. I’m always shopping on Revolve.com because they have free two day shipping, so my clothes are always there when I get home from the road.

Our cover shoot took place at The Mondrian Park Ave on the Terrace as well as the lower level lounge known as The Boogie Room which is managed by In Good Company Hospitality. We took a moment to chat with Chris Guidice, General Manager of IGC to find out about the spaces, what guests can enjoy and the hotel in general.
ATHLEISURE MAG: When did The Boogie Room launch?
CHRIS GUIDICE: The Boogie Room opened a little over a year ago and recently relaunched with brand new art on the walls and throughout the space.
AM: What is the ethos of The Boogie room?
CG: The Boogie Room is a place where art, music, drinks, and culture bridge the gap between approachability and exclusivity. This edgy bar, with its combination of street art and retro furniture, is the perfect hideaway from the hustle and bustle of Park Avenue South. The dim lighting and intimate space give an air of elusiveness, while still maintaining the warm and welcoming atmosphere that is typical of all IGC Hospitality’s venues.
AM: We love that there are murals at this lower level hotspot, what’s the story behind them and how often do they change?
CG: The walls feature beautiful murals full of bright colors painted by local artists serving as an homage to ’80s and '90s NYC street art. A group of talented artists were brought together and given the direction to create a fun atmosphere that has cultural and historical relevance to this amazing city.
AM: What are 3 signature drinks that we should have the next time that we’re at The Boogie Room?
CG: The Boogie Room’s specialty cocktails are everything on our bottle menu! Of course, we have a full bar with beer, wine, and spirits, but the parade of sparklers and bottles represent the ethos of a Boogie night.
AM: What events are taking place at The Boogie Room this fall that we should mark our calendars?
CG: The Boogie Room takes on a life of its own on Friday and Saturday nights. This nightlife hotspot features some of NYC’s most sought after DJs from 11:30 pm - 2 am every weekend. Think dancing, flowing drinks and bumping music.... There’s always something going on here!
AM: We also shot at the Mondrian Terrace as well – tell us about this space and more about this vibe?
CG: Mondrian Terrace is a year round terrace offering the best of both indoor and outdoor space. We are currently in the final month of our Rosé Terrace installation, a rosé lover’s paradise, and will soon be transitioning to a Fall-themed pop up. Our outdoor terrace overlooks the corner of Park Avenue South and East 30th Street. The indoor lounge is a canvas for seasonal soirees and NoMad nights.
AM: What are 3 signature bites that we should enjoy at Mondrian Terrace?
CG: We change the menu seasonally, but three of my current favorites are burrata with fig balsamic, beef short rib sliders, and the lamb meatballs with feta cheese and pine nuts. Each dish is perfect for snacking on as you sit and take in the great vistas of downtown Manhattan. If you’re feeling generous, they’re all very easy to share
AM: What events are taking place here that we should keep an eye out for as we continue into the fall?
CG: The Rosé Terrace at Mondrian Terrace is winding down and we’ll be debuting a new Fall/Winter pop up soon, so stay tuned! Our Beverage Manager Allie Klug and Executive Chef Todd Matthews are always working on incorporating seasonal ingredients into our menus, which means lots of specials to look forward to.
AM: For the Holiday season, is there anything taking place at The Boogie Room or the Mondrian Terrace that we should swing by?
CG: We’re planning our Halloween party at Mondrian Terrace. Guests can enjoy rooftop views, Halloween Cocktails, and a live DJ. Tickets for the event will be available soon, keep an eye out here for more details.
We also host a weekly Latin Night every Sunday. Of course, for those who really like to plan ahead, we have New Year’s Eve blowouts planned for all of the venues in Mondrian Park Avenue!
AM: With 3 venues at the Mondrian Park Avenue Hotel, what was the process behind coming up with spaces and concepts? You have definitely created different vibes that would fuel guests of the hotel, those that book an event, people who staycation and those who are in the neighborhood that ware interested in swinging by.
CG: The three spaces at the Mondrian have all been designed to have their own unique feel. Cleo is a beautiful Mediterranean restaurant which has American influences in the dishes and distinctly unique décor. Mondrian Terrace offers a relaxed atmosphere and seasonal delicacies, perfect for a first date or corporate party. The Boogie Room stands in stark contrast to the posh and sleek look of the Mondrian and surrounding Park Avenue, it is perfect celebrating birthdays, or just a place to dance the night away. All three spaces are inspired by the hotel’s namesake - Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. The Boogie Room is actually named after one of his paintings titled Broadway Boogie.
AM: Tell us about In Good Company and other locations do you have that we should keep on our radar?
CG: IGC has more than a dozen amazing venues. All super unique and hospitable. We’re excited to recently welcome Woodpecker by David Burke to the portfolio, as well as our second nightclub, Jewel Thief - opening next month! Whichever IGC Hospitality venue you choose to visit, I guarantee you will find the common thread of good food, good drinks, and great people.

This look was kicked up a notch for this beautiful gold jumpsuit. We wanted a lot of color for the eyes. Jessica used MORPHE X JACLYN HILL Eyeshadow Palette in Bling Bling and the Metallic Purple Shade Gem in the crease. A light blue shade from NYX Petit Brights Pallette was used in the inner corner. For the outer corners, Jessica used colors Iri Ji (a pink shade) and Ofala (an orange shade) from the JUVIA’S PLACE Festival Palette with Odogwo (gold shade from the same palette) in the center, INGLOT COSMETICS' 77 Eyeliner and added more of FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA Universal Gloss Bomb on the lips.

BAPE X WILSON CAMO EDITION COLLECTION
We attended the launch of the BAPE X Wilson Camo Edition Collection launch at the BAPE store right before the US Open. We took some time to talk to Kristina Peterson-Lohman of Wilson to find out how this collaboration came about.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Can you tell us about the relationships between the heritage of Wilson as a brand and it's relationship to tennis.
KRISTINA PETERSON-LOHMAN: Wilson was founded in 1914 and one of the very first sports it made gear for was tennis. We've been at the heart of the sport since that time.
AM: How did the partnership with BAPE come about and why is this a collaboration that Wilson would want to do?
KPL: We know that people who love tennis are looking for ways to stand out on court - even challenge the status quo of what traditional tennis gear looks like. A few weeks ago, we introduced our new camouflage "CAMO" Edition collection of performance tennis gear. The inspiration for this collection was New York - a youthful, vibrant, bustling city - and home to the only grand slam in Amerca.
The BAPE Wilson collaboration is a next step in our mission to change the game, give our players more vibrant and contemporary choices, and better connect to the lives of our players... both on and off the court. It's a unique partnership between the leader in performance tennis and the leader in premium street-style apparel, shoes and accessories. And in our eyes, there is no other apparel brand that is more synonymous with camouflage, urban, edgy street-style, and premium high end clothing than BAPE.
AM: What items are within this collaboration?
KPL: The BAPE Wilson camo racket will be available a bit later this year in BAPE stores around the world. And we look forward to sharing additional BAPE Wilson products with everyone in the next few months.
AM: In addition to purchasing at the BAPE store, is this racket available at Wilson's pop up store at the US Open?
KPL: The Wilson CAMO Edition collection is available at our retail store on the US Open grounds. The BAPE Wilson racket will be available a bit later this year in BAPE stores in the US and in Japan.

Are you finding it stressful to work out? Does it feel like work? Get on the Dance Floor
If you are not the sporty type – then dancing can be a great alternative if you want to get fit – And there are different dance types. You'll find at least one that appeals to you: salsa, square dancing, ballroom, African, Country, Western, and folk dancing. Not having a partner holding you back? Try hula, clogging, belly or tap dancing.
A recent and more strenuous physical fitness craze is Capoeira which adds some martial arts to dancing. You dance to music turning your back head and back using moves that may be interpreted as kickboxing or dancing.
Go on a Treasure Hunt
Take a group of friends or even your family on a geocaching adventure. Geocaching will involve the use of GPS to find a hidden logbook and cache of trinkets. While it sounds simple, cachers keep adding new twists. For instance, one has to carry a “hitchhiker” from one cache to the next. The process of getting to a cache may be like a leisurely zip-line glide or even call for expertise as is the case with rock-climbing. The first step is simply acquiring a GPS device. The information regarding cache locations and geocaching is on geocaching websites.
Join a Sport You Love
Maybe you have a sport that you always enjoyed as a child or have always wanted to try – such as netball. Find a local team and join it. Alternatively, you can mobilize friends and family members and organize regular games. Having teammates waiting on you will help you muster the motivation you need to get out of your comfort zone and be consistent. The social aspects of being a member of a team will make it feel like less of an exercise.
Skating
Skating is a fun-filled outdoor activity that will help you tone your body especially the lower part. It is an excellent alternative to jogging as it's easier on the joints. Both inline and ice skating are good in burning calories. A 30-minute glide around the neighborhood can help you burn about 250 calories. If you have no clue on how to skate, you can find programs within your reach that cater for beginners of all ages.
Prepare for an Active Vacation
Have you ever considered spending your time at a fantasy sports camp, or going on a country bike tour? Such activities can satisfy your craving for fun while helping you stay in shape. But the extent of injuries sustained during such events may inform your decision - whether to take the next trip or not. To limit muscle injury and soreness, make sure to train before embarking on your trip – the upcoming vacation will be your source of inspiration.
