6 WAYS TO OBTAIN THE ULTIMATE IN HYDRATION
Water is the key to life and it seems like as much as we know that we need it, there seems to be a bit of confusion on how we get through our water journey. Interestingly, much like everything in life, there is a schedule that we can use to stay on track!
I. WAKE AND HYDRATE
It's no joke, drinking water as soon as you get up is a great way to kick start your day! Especially when you're a coffee drinker, you want to ensure that you have established your hydration block as soon as you're up and moving.
II. HOLD OFF ON THE COFFEE
Many people hit the floor, go to the bathroom and the hunt for coffee is on - but drinking coffee actually makes you want to go to the bathroom which increases the feeling of dehydration. By waiting 2-3 hours, you've given your body some time to hold onto the water that you put in.
III. DURING MEALS, DRINK WATER
As you enjoy your meal, drink water. This allows you to come up for air while also allowing your body to feel full. It's best for the digestion and it ensures that your intake of water continues throughout your day!
IV. EAT FOOD THAT HAVE A HIGH WATER CONTENT
If you're water bottle isn't nearby, think of other ways to incorporate water such as cantaloupe, spinach, oranges, celery, cucumbers and of course watermelon (we're always on the hunt for yellow watermelon which we find super hydrating). Of course, when consuming them, go ahead and take refreshing sips of water as well.
V. AVOID CAFFEINE 6 HOURS BEFORE BED TIME
Just like you should make sure that coffee is consumed after you have been up for a few hours, you need a little bit more of a buffer before you go to bed. 6 hours means that when you hit that slump at work, you'll have to find other means to give you a bit of a burst to continue throughout your day.
VI. GRAB A GLASS OF WATER BEFORE BED
Think about it if you haven't consumed a lot of water throughout the day as noted above, by the time you get to the evening, you're not only dehydrated BUT you're sleeping throughout the night without any water! Drinking one glass will keep you refreshed and make it easier for your body to do what it does while you slumber!
SPOTLIGHT ON AGING WITH DR. NICK PERRICONE
Many times, when we ask our friends and those interviewed in our issues, we always hear about them using Perricone MD, which is a line of beauty items that focus on fighting the signs of aging. We're always excited to see what is next with the brand. In addition to skincare, Dr. Nick Perricone has now included hydrogenated water. We're so pleased to share our interview with this innovator.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Many of our readers are familiar with you and your brand, Perricone MD in terms of beauty. Please tell us about how you got into the beauty industry as well as what was
the moment that initiated you creating a skincare line?
DR. NICK PERRICONE: My initial quest to find ways to stop, prevent and reverse the negative effects of inflammation in my dermatology patients led the foundation for Perricone MD. My
scientific studies have resulted in 150+ US and international scientific patents for the treatment of skin and systemic disease, for reversing and preventing damage to skin caused by factors
such as age, the sun, the environment, and hormonal changes. Because my focus is on treating the underlying inflammation as the causative factor, my research focuses on utilizing antioxidants, which act as natural anti-inflammatories from nutritional substances, in topical formulations.
My goal is to treat aging and the signs of aging, including aging skin as a disease— rather than just cover up the problems, because chronic, sub-clinical inflammation (invisible to the eye)
the root of many diseases associated with aging, including aging skin. And so my goal is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level through the creation of a three-tiered anti-inflammatory program consisting of:
1. Anti-inflammatory diet
2. Anti-inflammatory nutritional supplements
3. Anti-inflammatory topicals
Therefore, creating topicals that also act as antioxidants, nature’s natural anti-inflammatories, was and continues to be my inspiration.
AM: Your skincare line includes topical products as well as supplements - why is this an essential mix in terms of taking care of and maintaining your skin?
DR. NP: Supplements and topicals work synergistically and therefore I recommend that we take antioxidants and vitamins as supplements and apply them topically as well.
To receive therapeutic amounts of certain nutrients, such as alpha lipoic acid, supplementation is necessary because it is difficult to get adequate amounts from the foods we eat. Luckily, nutritional supplements have come a long way from the minimal, “one-a-day” multivitamins of past generations.
Now we have highly targeted antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals that can do everything from sharpening our brain power, repairing cells, and burning fat to increasing
muscle tone, restoring memory and heightening libido. Many of these super antioxidants penetrate right into the cell where they combat free radicals and decrease inflammation. Because of this, the right supplements can keep us much younger than our chronological years.
Supplements of high quality can (in addition to the anti-inflammatory diet) create beauty from the inside out. Nutrients that possess anti-oxidant properties act as natural anti-inflammatories.
I recommend a variety of nutrients that are designed to work synergistically to enhance the benefits of the anti-inflammatory diet. These nutrients offer anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and fat metabolizing boosting benefits and help prevent and reverse oxidative damage on a cellular level, of critical importance as we age. The same level of repair cannot be achieved through diet or topicals alone.
AM: A number of celebs we have talked to, introduced us to Dr, Perricone Hydration Water - when did you realize that this is an area you wanted to include within your brand?
DR. NP: When I was first introduced to hydrogen as a therapeutic substance more than five years ago, and learned of its powerful antioxidant properties, I recognized an affordable, available and non-toxic solution to many of the chronic, debilitating diseases and accelerated
signs of aging that currently plague both children and adults the world over.
AM: Hydrogen Water has been a trend on the rise and many would assume that this ingredient is already in water, is there more of this element - what makes hydrogen water so different then what we drink at home or purchase in stores?
DR. NP: When hydrogen is infused in water, at measurable therapeutic levels, it provides instantly available benefits, positively affecting gene regulation and gene expression, while silencing negative genes. For the past three decades my life has been devoted to researching the mystery of aging. As a dermatologist, finding therapeutic interventions for aging skin has
been a particular interest and passion. In my first book I wrote about the importance of beauty from the inside out and how low-grade inflammation works nonstop to degrade all organ systems — including the skin. Nothing has excited me more than the discovery of hydrogen and hydrogen-infused water. I have never seen anything that has so much activity, giving us increased physical and mental energy on a cellular level, while providing superior protection from free radicals—a major contributor to wrinkled, sagging skin.
AM: How is Dr Perricone Hydration Water different then other hydrogen offerings in the market?
DR. NP: There are other forms of hydrogen water available - in stick and tablet form, in pouches and other types of containers.
Perricone Hydrogen Water is regularly tested to insure efficacious levels of hydrogen. Cans are specially designed with a polymer coating to contain and protect the hydrogen water ensuring that you receive optimum levels of hydrogen.
AM: Why should someone drink Dr Perricone Hydration Water and what are the benefits of consuming it?
DR. NP: Before now a natural beauty and energy drink which enhances the mood and at the same time make us more awake — without being over-stimulated as is seen when ingesting
caffeinated and sugared drinks, did not exist. Thanks to the discovery of hydrogen water we now have a safe and effective way to increase energy levels and focus, both mental and physical, in a safe and effective manner, while increasing feelings of well-being. And without the jitters or any of the unpleasant side effects found in traditional energy drinks.
• No Calories
• No Sugar
• No Caffeine
• No Artificial or harmful ingredients, coloring or additives of any kind
• Portable, can go anywhere, work, gym, play
• Increases productivity safely
• Instant, convenient no preparation involved
Just pure water infused with molecular hydrogen.
The benefits of hydrogen water include the following:
• Has beneficial effects on all organ systems including the skin
• Natural antioxidant/anti-inflammatory
• Increased energy
• Improved athletic performance
• Increased endurance
• Speeds muscle recovery
• Increased sense of well-being
• Enhanced cognitive function
• Reduced travel fatigue
• Protects against the effects of intoxicants
AM: How does this water play well with the family of products that you offer at Perricone MD?
DR. NP: Its powerful antioxidant properties make it the perfect complement to topicals creating beauty from the inside out.
AM: How much Hydrogen Water should be consumed throughout the day/week?
DR. NP: Three 8.3 ounce cans or two 12 ounce cans daily. After a vigorous workout you can follow with another eight or 12 oz can later in the day.
AM: You have always been at the forefront of great skin from product offerings, your patients and as an author. What other products should we keep an eye out from you on as we continue into 2018.
DR. NP: A higher potency Cold Plasma as well as a focus on hydrogen topicals.
AM: If you could create an essential kit of must haves for skin, what would you suggest should be in it?
DR. NP: Hydrogen water, supplements formulated by a reputable company and topicals with antioxidant properties.
AM: With cold temperatures rising, how should we protect our skin from the elements?
DR. NP: Winter often brings us dry skin, which is actually a manifestation of chronic sub clinical (invisible to the eye) inflammation. For optimum resolution, follow the three – tiered anti-inflammatory program, which consists of anti-inflammatory foods, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant supplements and topical anti-inflammatory anti-oxidants. While topicals can do wonders, it is of critical importance to not forget the dietary component which can both cause and make worse all of these conditions. Alpha lipoic acid as a topical is great because it normalizes the skin.
You can counter the causes of dry, flakey skin internally through a healthy diet and by taking nourishing, antioxidant-rich supplements and topicals that contain Alpha lipoic acid. ALA works synergistically with other antioxidants in the skin to reduce the damaging inflammatory
effects of ultraviolet radiation. Its antioxidant properties act as natural anti-inflammatories to counter the dry flaky skin.
Also take essential fatty acids in the form of omega 3 fish oil capsules and make sure to include cold water fish such as salmon, nuts and seeds and coconut oil in your daily diet.
AM: For those of us that travel frequently, what should be in our carry-on to ensure that are skin glows and doesn't have the tired looking effects of long and sometimes delayed travel!
DR. NP: A special note on travel fatigue:
The drinking of hydrogen infused water can have a dramatic effect on people who are travel fatigued and sleep deprived. Drinking 8 to 12 ounces of this water can relieve symptoms in 30 minutes to one hour.

WITH THE CREW
When you think about the Olympics, a number of sports come to mind. In the list of classic sports during these games, rowing is at the top of our list. It's a sport that creates images of collegiate athletes, country clubs, and symphony in motion. Known as the oldest contested
collegiate sport, the first race was between the Harvard-Yale regatte in 1852! Back in the 20's and 30's, collegiate crew received the type of press that baseball gets and it seems like there is a resurgence that has taken place. We had the opportunity to know more about the sport, how it has a lot of commonalities with studio rowing as well as understanding why there is an increased focus in making this sport accessible to more people.
We found ourselves at the members only, Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, Connecticut - owned by Howard Winklevoss (this is one of 3 rowing clubs in the Winklevoss umbrella), learning about the fundamentals of rowing from an elite team of trainers from RowAmerica
(their focus is to support, promote and expand the sport of rowing), and the Co-Founders of ROW HOUSE NYC who have indoor rowing studios in NYC.
Howard's awareness of the sport came through his sons (Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss who competed throughout their academic career as well as placing 6th during the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing - they are also known as crypto currency internet entrepreneurs) and their love of training at this particular rowing club that encouraged him to not only buy this boathouse, but additional facilities as a means to garner increased interest of the sport and to preserve it as well.
To create an interest in the sport, a partnership between Saugatuck Rowing Club and ROW HOUSE NYC was created to allow members of the rowing studio to have the opportunity to row on the water. Many of the skills utilized in studio become building blocks when on the
water working as a team.
In addition, this boathouse is internationally recognized as a premier boatclub that has produced annual national and Olympic champions. Members can enjoy an array of rowing programs whether they're a novice or Olympic bound. Additional offerings include a number of workout methods that are offered from yoga, spinning, body sculpting, access to a state of the art gym as well as a lounge and restaurant.
Prior to our day on the water, we had rowed in studio at ROW HOUSE NYC. It's a total body workout that is low impact but has a lot of energy. In studio, it feels like an individual sport where you compete with yourself. While at the boathouse, we warmed up rowing as you
would in studio but transitioning into actually rowing on the water, there is a lot of discipline and connection in order to truly flow on the water!
To have our team of rowers work in sync whether we were going forward, backing up and even getting the boat in the water - taking direction is key. In addition, you learn that each person is needed for the smoothest ride! After a few hours on the water, we hit our stride and working the oars and gaining co-ordination became much easier.
To find out more about indoor rowing, visit ROW HOUSE NYC to find your nearest location. Once you begin working out at their facility, you can find out more about introducing yourself to rowing on water at Saugatuck Rowing Club.

ATHLEISURE LIST | SUNDAYS NAIL STUDIO
Getting your nails done is like a sanctuary and a place where you can simply zone out and get back to a balanced sense of self. Recently, we went to Sundays Nail Studio that took this mantra to the next level.
Upon entering this Madison Square area studio, you realize that there are a number of neutral palettes which presents a sense of calm, there are books that allow you to have moments of introspection and the way that things are seamlessly moved is not distracting as you enjoy your treatment.
You can enjoy having a glass of wine, water, tea or a pressed juice whether you're having a manicure or a pedicure. We enjoyed being able to have headsets provided to us as we enjoyed moments of meditation via Inscape (they're in bite-sized sessions which you can find whatever suits you) as well as having a selection of polishes to choose from their own line! It is worth noting that their in house line (same name) is 10-Free, nontoxic natural nail care products. Their commitment to the health and safety of their employees and customers is an essential compoenent of what makes this salon so great.
The entire studio is known as a place where after your treatment, you can continue to relax downstairs or upstairs to reflect or continue your meditation. Other interesting items worth noting is that you can enjoy a massage.
The ethos of Sundays is based in wellness, confidence and simplicity. This extends to events that take place at the salon which includes a book club, trunk shows and more. It's a place that really fosters and empowers those that come from a body, mind and soul perspective. Make sure you keep an eye on their website for upcoming events as well as additional packages that are offered as we think it's a great place to enjoy with groups as well as to pop in during your lunch break or any "me moments" that you're looking to take for yourself.

From Danielle Oron of I Will Not Eat Oysters
This is such a zippy treat that we urge you to try!
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
Pickled Beet Butter:
1 small beet
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup water
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp mustard powder, optional
1 stick (8 tbsp) unsalted butter, room temp
Lentil Salad:
1 cup beluga lentils, rinsed
2 cups chicken or vegetable stock
1/2 tsp salt

2 dried bay leaves
3 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp grainy mustard
1 tbsp chopped dill

2 whole wheat demi-baguettes, cut open
2 hard boiled eggs, sliced
arugula
Maldon Salt and fresh black pepper
DIRECTIONS
1. Place the beet in a pot and cover with cold water at least 2-inches above the beet. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Boil the beet for 45-50 minutes until cooked through. Allow the beet to cool. Peel by rubbing the skin off with a paper towel. Cut the beet into 1/4" cubes and place them in a non-reactive bowl.

2. Drain the beets and transfer them to a food processor. Process until very finely chopped. Combine the beets and a pinch or two of salt with the room temperature butter until combined. This butter is best when eaten at room temperature.
3. Place the lentils, stock, salt, pepper and bay leaves in a sauce pot with tight fitting lid. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, cover, turn the heat down to low, and simmer for 20 minutes until the lentils are al-dente. Drain the excess liquid and discard the bay leaves. Set aside to cool.
4. Whisk the lemon juice, grainy mustard, dill, salt, cumin and fresh pepper in a small bowl. While whisking, slowly drizzle in the olive oil to emulsify the dressing. Pour the dressing over the lentils and mix to combine.
5. Spread the pickled beet butter on each side of the baguette. Be generous. Lay the sliced egg on the bottom half and top with a lots of lentil salad, arugula and garnish with Maldon salt and fresh black pepper. Top and enjoy!
BEET INFUSED MARGARITAS WITH ROSEMARY SYRUP
