CRUEL INTENTIONS

Prime Video Original Series

Prime Video

Growing up, many of us enjoyed seeing the original Cruel Intentions film that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Clerks III, Dexter: Original Sin), Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde, The Morning Show, Big Little Lies), Ryan Phillippe (Crash, Shooter, Big Sky), and Selma Blair (The Sweetest Thing, Hellboy franchise, American Crime Story: Monica Lewinsky) which focused on elite highschoolers in NYC in a modern retelling of the 1872 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Throughout this movie, we see how a pair of step siblings create havoc through their circle and social scene by manipulating others, having sex, and their use of drugs.

With the cult success of this movie, it's not a surprise that it has come back with the same focus in an updated way on Prime Video. This iteration of Cruel Intentions takes us to another elite social scene in college with a number of the antics and scenarios that appeared in the film.

Do you need to see the film in order to enjoy the series? No as the two can be enjoyed independently. Of course, if you have seen the film, you'll see certain iconic shots in the film, you'll enjoy the modern updates that have been included in this one and you can see how the plot has a bit of a different look and feel as it applies to the collegiate set versus when it focused on those in highschool. It's still a great watch that you can enjoy especially as we head into the holiday season.

We love a truly bingeable podcast that you could listen to in an afternoon while you're going about your day. Case 63 is a futuristic and yet current story that bends space and time as Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Scenes From a Marriage, Moon Knight) and Julianne Moore (The Hours, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Hunger Games Franchise) navigate a doctor-patient relationship that has the highest stakes in terms of maintaining the future of the world.

For the listener, we're taken on a society that has just come out of the same pandemic that we navigated; however, the time traveler is actually trying to head off the next pandemic that is a distant variant from COVID. In addition, the podcast is rooted in questioning what we know and what we are able to grapple with and what happens when the things that we find make us understand that we have to step out on faith to do what we may not know in order to move forward.

The twists that take place in this podcast are those that we hope will bring about a second season and the dynamics between these two powerhouses are truly an audible pleasure to listen to.

LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE

Netflix Original

Netflix

A few years ago, we read Luckiest Girl Alive from Jessica Knoll and was hooked from the first page. It feels like a story that begs to be made into a film. In Netflix's Luckiest Girl Alive, we meet Tifani FaNelli played by Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Bad Moms, Ted) who is a successful 30-something newspaper gossip columnist who is living the life in NY. She is about to leave her job to take a Senior Editor position at The New York Times Magazine.

She is set to marry her husband Luke Harrison, played by Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story franchise, The Big Short, La La Land). This defintiely has the makings of a storybook life.

But not everything is as it seems as Tiffani has a few things in her past that are bubbling up when a true crime documentary comes out that shares the details of an incident that took place at a private boarding school. Tifani has information that isn't known and it is now threatening her life.

MUMBAI CRIME

Radiotopia from PRX

Apple Podcast

We do love a podcast episode that is under 20 minutes. Mumbai Crime takes us on a journey that gives us the sights and sounds of Mumbai through the eyes of Thomas who is playing Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for 1,000,000,000 Rupees. Each episode in this 10 part thriller has him answering a question and giving us insight into his life and what ultimately brought him to the show.

This is another podcast that has audio gems that places the listener into the very world that he is sharing with us. It also has a few twists and turns that bring it all together.

SELLING THE OC

Netflix Original

Netflix

We have enjoyed Selling Sunset which follows the Oppenheim Group as they make major sales, peek into their lives and more. In this series, we've known that there would be an expansion which takes us to Selling the OC with their new office in Orange County. We continue to follow Jason and his brother/partner Brett Oppenheim as they have a new realtors that will be part of this office. We know that this month, we'll be bingeing this episode to get to know the new cast as well as to see if there will be an overlap with the LA cast!

THE REHEARSAL

HBO Max

HBO

We've all had an experience where there is a conversation that we need to have and we run a few scenarios in our head to see how we will do it. In The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder takes anything that you may have done to the next level by rehearsing every interaction that one may have to approach a certain event from creating exact replicas of the space that the encounter will take place, documenting and creating conversation maps so that the person can anticipate what will happen and doing copious run throughs. Although we can question Nathan's episode, we see how committed he is to this school of thought as we see that he does the same thing in preparing to talk to those that he is about to help!

The lengths that he goes through to become his subjects in order to understand them and the environment that they live in is next level! You can binge the entire season as in this case, seeing is believing! WIth Season 2 already greenlit, we wonder what he will tackle next and what boundaries he will push, how many actors he will swap in and out in order to rehearse a situation so that the subject can carry out what they need to do!

CHAT SH!T

Max Original

Spotify

We're still bummed that HBO's Insecure is over, but we were excited to hear that Issa Rae had another show on deck that releases weekly on HBO Max called RAP SH!T! We leave LA and head to Miami where we enjoy hearing Miami area artists, see how our two main characters evolve into a rap duo, we have mirror girl rap moments and enjoy watching them navigate their lives as well as the music industry!

CHAT SH!T is the companion podcast hosted by Zach Campbell and Jessie Woo who give clarity to each episode, give us insight into Miami, the Haitian community and provides hot takes on what takes place in the episodes.

THE BRIDGE

Max Original

HBO Max

We got hooked on Max Original's The Bridge and quickly binged Season 1 and 2. We never thought that watching people come together to make a bridge from their island to a location that's at a designated spot. Along the way, they have mini challenges, have to deal with team dynamics and a set period of time to complete the build. The 1st season dropped last year and the current season dropped earlier this summer.

You'll never look at teamwork in the same way! Who knew that the power of building alliances, listening to others and keeping the course would be a reality show that we would want to know more about!

X MARKS THE SPOT: THE LEGEND OF FORREST FENN

Cavalry Audio

Spotify

Throughout the pandemic, we enjoyed listening to podcasts that talked about wealthy individuals who decided to create treasure hunts around the world. Inevitably, there are clues, it creates havoc as people go to the extreme to find them, and the results can be less than expected.

In X Marks the Spot: The Legend of Forrest Fenn, we get to hear about Forrest Fenn's backstory, a wealthy man who believes he will die soon and decides to create a treasure hunt. We get to hear about his process in creating the clues and eventually finding that he in fact is not dying as soon as thought - but he continues to allow the game to be played.

Although he doesn't give hints to those who are playing, from time to time he does clarify certain points. Although Forrest is dead now, we get a breakdown on what the clues mean, those who felt that they had found or almost found the treasure as well as hearing about those who begged for the game to stop due to safety issues! This true story is one that is a great listen and allows you to interpret what it woudl mean if you had the opportunity to go on this quest.
