Celebrity Manicurist and Owner of As U Wish Nail Spa, Skyy Hadley has a few tips on what we need to know about Nail Health especially for those of us that enjoy getting gel manicures!
If getting a gel or acrylic set is inevitable, take proper care of your nails prior to the treatment to reduce damage post-removal. Use a nail hardener so nails will become stronger and less prone to damage.
Avoid keeping gel or acrylics on for longer than two weeks, with three-week wear being the absolute max. Nails need to breath in order to be healthy, and these heavy polishes suffocate the nail beds and cuticles.
Once your polish is removed, it’s instrumental to begin the repair process immediately to minimize long-term damage. The Sally Hansen Gel Rehab Overnight Nail Mask is the perfect remedy because after applying, drying and going to bed, all you have to do is wash off the treatment to reveal healthier nails. For nails that are super damaged, apply the treatment three consecutive nights in a row.
In addition to the Overnight Nail Mask, moisturizing and taking vitamins will help to strengthen your nails between manicures, and helps to achieve strong, healthy nails for the long-run.

The weather is only going to keep getting colder. So, it’s imperative that we protect our nails no matter what! We talked with Celebrity Manicurist, Skyy Hadley on what we should do to make sure that are hands look good especially during this cold and dry part of the year!
Start with a Clean Canvas Hand cream is a necessity for winter hydration, but too much of it will make your nail polish come right off. Be sure to use nail polish remover before each polish application to remove surface oils, and make for a cleaner and more long-lasting manicure.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Cold, dry air and a chilly climate is going to suck the moisture out of your skin, and this includes your hands, nails, and cuticles. Apply and re-apply a nourishing cuticle oil as needed throughout the day to avoid hangnails, cracked cuticles, and peeling nails. Seal in the moisture with a heavy-duty hand cream, and you'll be good to go.
Never Go Naked Think of nail polish as a strong suit of armor for your nails. Having a fresh manicure makes you look polished and put-together and at the same time prevents your natural nails from peeling, breaking, and chipping. Save on time (and extra steps) and use an all-in-one formula with a built-in base and top coat.
Use a Nail Strengthener Create the ultimate barrier of protection using a nail strengthener which will prevent splitting, chipping, and cracking, all while helping your nails grow. Use it as a strengthening base coat - or for those who prefer to go au naturale, paint on one coat for a shield of protection without the polish.

When it comes to getting glamorous hair many of the world's celebs turn to Sarah Potempa, a bicoastal hairstylist whose clientele includes: Lea Michele, Emily Blunt, Ana de Armas, Busy Philipps and Millie Bobby Brown. Editorially, her work has graced shoots for Vogue, Paper, Marie Claire, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair, Esquire, and W. In addition, she has been the hair partner for a number of Fashion Week shows as well as Victoria's Secret shows. She is the Creator and CEO of the best-selling Beachwaver Co. curling iron and styling tools.
We took some time to chat with this hair visionary to find out about how she came up with this successful line, upcoming launches and her participation as a partner in the World Surf League as the title sponsor of the first ever Beachwaver Maui Pro.
ATHLEISURE MAG: Tell us about the a-ha moment that took place for you to create The Beachwaver Co.
SARAH POTEMPA: My “aha” moment came when I was on the phone with a beauty editor describing how to get gorgeous, red carpet worthy waves at home. I explained to the editor, as I had done many times on tv segments, how-to videos, and beauty articles, how you had to hold the curling iron upside down and wrap the hair backwards. She said it was too confusing to write "upside down and backwards" and sounded difficult to do on your own hair. So when we hung up, I sat down and drew out the idea to have an iron that could be held upright, allowing you to curl both sides of your hair seamlessly with the push of a button. I saw a need for a curling iron that all women could use on themselves; one that would give incredible results without a hairdresser.
The Beachwaver is a rotating curling iron that you hold upright. It rotates in both directions and you control it with the touch of a button! All you have to do is clamp the hair, tap the arrow away from the face, hold the barrel for 3-4 seconds and release straight down for a perfect wave. It also has 350 custom parts and 3 computer boards, which control features like the digital temperature setting, dual rotation, and heat up and rotation speed allowing for more customized use.
AM: With the holidays coming up, what are items from your line that we should make sure we’re gifting to others or snagging for ourselves?
SP: We recently launched our Beachwaver S Series in a Dual Voltage model; this is a perfect holiday gift as it has the same user-friendly functions but is compatible internationally so it can travel with you anywhere! Its ceramic, rotating barrel provides easy, quality waves in minutes! The new launches from our new Beachwaver Co. Collection are must-haves as well – Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray to create a protective barrier while heatstyling and Second Chance Dry Shampoo to revive your hair and restore fullness. The holidays are a busy time so all these products combined will make sure your hair can withstand 2nd or even 3rd day hair, and make touch-ups super easy and quick.
AM: Tell us about your sponsorship of the World Surf’s League Maui Women’s Pro Championship – how did it come about, what will you be doing in this partnership and how synergistic is this with your brand?
SP: The Beachwaver Co. is thrilled to be partnered with the WSL as title sponsor of the first-ever Beachwaver Maui Pro. This partnership extends beyond a shared love of beautiful beaches and perfect waves. We are proud to partner with such strong athletes and role models and I am so excited to work with these incredible women, with equally incredible stories, who are inspirations to people around the world, and who inspire us, too. Our brand shares so many of the same philosophies as the WSL, between innovation, women’s empowerment, inspiration, and especially the fact that they just announced equal pay for all athletes – so amazing! We are the brand known for creating gorgeous beachy waves so it just made sense to partner up with the WSL and these phenomenal athletes and bring our fans and audience along to Maui as we chase the perfect wave together!
AM: With the holidays coming up, we all love doing something fun with our hair. What would you suggest as an easy quick do and let us know the tools of the trade that we need to get to do it.
SP: I love this Double Half-Up with Braids and Beachwaves using the Beachwaver and these super cute accessories we just launched. This is a really fun and festive look to try for the holidays!
Step 1. Prep the hair using The Beachwaver Co. Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray. Section off the top half of your hair and divide into two equal parts. Pull each section into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic.
Step 2. Using The Beachwaver Co. Half Up, create two topknots by pulling each ponytail through the Half Up and slide it towards the ends. Roll the Half-Up down towards the base and bend each side under. Create two 3-strand braids under each topknot and secure the ends with an elastic. Take two of The Beachwaver Co. Velvet Bows and clip directly underneath each topknot.
Step 3. Curl using The Beachwaver S1.25, rotating the hair away from the face and finish with The Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray for additional lightweight hold.
AM: Are there new products that you are releasing next year that we should keep an eye out for?
SP: Yes! Creating innovation in product development is a huge passion for us as a brand. With the success of the patented Beachwaver® Tools, our fans were constantly asking for products to pair with their Beachwaver or Coast Pro styling iron! As a women owned company, we wanted to create a vegan, cruelty-free line that was free of negative energy and we have spent over 2 years creating innovative formulas with strengthening benefits, as well as styling. The Beachwaver Co. Collection products are free of parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, mineral oil, benzophenone, and phthalates, and that’s something my sisters and I are so proud of. We worked closely together on this for years and felt that we had a responsibility to future generations to create products that are not only good for humans, but also for the environment. Great Barrier Heat Protectant Hairspray and Second Chance Dry Shampoo are available now on Beachwaver.com and more will be launching in early 2019 so keep your eyes peeled on Instagram @sarahpotempa and @thebeachwaver!
AM: How are you spending the holiday this year?
SP: With my family!
AM: How do you take time for yourself to ensure that you have appropriate downtime?
SP: One of my favorite ways to unwind in my downtime is with Green tea, a piece of dark chocolate, listening to the Avett Brothers on our record player and sitting by the fire! I also have two kids and a huge 125 lb. Alaskan Malamute puppy!! On our days off, we love to go to the dog park, cook brunch, and go on a bike ride through the forest preserve by our house! To really unwind and relax, I go to hot yoga with my sister and get a good iced coffee cold brew after!
ATHLEISURE MAG: We had the chance to talk to Australian 6X world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore briefly about her win. Since her entry into women's professional surfing in 2007, she has dominated the scene by winning her first world title as a rookie, then 3 consecutive world titles (no other surfer in men's or women's) can claim this accolade! In addition to her 6 ASP World Titles, she has 24 Elite World Tour victories as well!
What does it mean to take this title at the Beachwaver Maui Pro and what is the state of women's surfing now?
STEPHANIE GILMORE: This season has been incredible and to win my 7th WSL Title in Honolua Bay at the Beachwaver Maui Pro was so special. Women's surfing has never been in a better place - the level on the tour just keeps going up and up, the recent prize money equality announcement was groundbreaking and the amazing support of brands like Beachwaver is so important. I can't wait for 2019!

Looking young and amazing is still achievable even after the 60th birthday. This is, however heavily dependent on how best you take care of your body. Keeping your wardrobe up to date with the current fashion trends will be the first step to looking younger. Aging will also be taken care of and inhibited when the best anti-aging products are used. This will leave you looking fabulous and adorable regardless of your age.
One of the most upsetting signs of aging is gray hair. Every time you face the mirror, this will be a constant reminder of your age. Many women have been known to lose their confidence and their great looks when grey hair sets in. This is especially disappointing to career women whose career progression is determined by their looks. Sales personnel and real estate agents are just but a few who can't stand gray hair.
How then do you look young as you age? This article will highlight several tips that will make you look younger, regardless of your age. These tips will be essential, especially to women developing gray hair.
Changing your hair color will make you look youthful. The color will help you cover up any gray hair, thus sustaining that desired look. The color chosen should, however, complements your skin tone. For dark colored hair, a light color will be appropriate. Dark hair casts dark shadows on your face that highlight facial wrinkles. Lightening up this hair will effectively hide these flaws. This will give your face a healthy glow and sufficiently mask your gray hair. Light colors, on the other hand, may promote aging. These should be avoided totally as they may worsen your hair condition.
A bad haircut promotes aging by as much as 10 years. Choosing the wrong hair cut will make you look 50 even if you're in your mid-thirties. Changing your haircut to a new anti-aging hairstyle will shave some years off your looks. Shortening your hair is especially recommended as long hair draws a lot of attention to your face. Keeping it short will, therefore, make you look younger and full of life. When a suitable anti-aging haircut is chosen, your age will easily be forgotten. This is vital in ensuring that you look and feel great about yourself and your age.
Gray hair is inevitable as one gets old. But some women will show signs of gray hair at a very tender age. Holly Moore from SVHairRegeneres.com says that many women start getting gray hair in their thirties. This is often promoted by certain nutritional deficiencies in the body. When these occurrences happen, several gray hair reversal techniques can be used. These techniques are tested and proven to renew your hair by significantly reversing graying. Some of these techniques include the application of hair renewal gels and dietary changes. Applying soft gels to your hair on a regular basis will reverse premature hair graying. Introduction to nutritional supplements will also inhibit this process, thus delaying premature graying of your hair.
Soft hair tends to be coarse as one gets old. Changing your hair color will mask gray hair, but it will still remain coarse. Coarse hair is easily noticeable as it will appear thin and curly. This makes you look aged especially if your hair is thick and straight. Various hair care products will come in handy softening coarse hair. Anti-aging hair care products will ensure thick and robust hair growth. Regular use of these products will counter the effects of aging and you will end up looking as youthful as you desire.
Focusing all your attention on your hair and none to your face is unwise. Old skins may have several blemishes and wrinkles. As these skins do not produce extra shine, it is vital that they are brightened. One of the best ways to protect your skin is to keep it hydrated. When dull and blotchy skin is well hydrated, blemishes and wrinkles are less visible. This makes your skin soft and gentle. Protecting your skin against sun damage is also vital. Harmful UV rays will not only damage the skin, but also promote hair shedding. Applying sunscreen on a regular basis will, therefore, leave you looking way younger than you are.
The above tips will hinder gray hair from making you look older. These will help you maintain your beauty, something that you will always be proud of. Applying these tips will guarantee a younger look even as you get old.

Darren won Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television. The cast has also won Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
We chatted with Makeup Artist Kindra Mann to walk us through creating his grooming look:
SKIN:
First, she started off by prepping Darren’s skin using the NEW Goddess Cleansing Ritual Dual Cleanser. This two-step miracle spa-in-a-jar duo is perfect for a fresh, perfectly spa-cleansed complexion, and the essential oils help to calm, hydrate and soothe even the most sensitive complexion. She started by massaging Ritual 1, the Radiance Citrus Oil into the complexion to remove any surface impurities, and then I used Ritual 2, the Purifying Bamboo Charcoal pollution solution to adsorb any deeper rooted build-up. This incredible cleanser leaves men’s complexions looking so clean, glowing and refreshed.
Next, she applied the soothing, calming Goddess Skin Clay Mask – the Spanish clays bring down any redness, and the oils instantly moisturize. I followed this with the Revolutionary Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask for 15 minutes – the bio-mimetic technology delivers the ingredients to the third layer of the epidermis. This mask is a skin savior.
To ensure the skin was properly hydrated and looking it’s best, I applied Charlotte’s Magic Cream. This award-winning, hydrating moisturizer features a uniquely magical blend of oils & actives - a ‘magic 8’ of skin-savior ingredients that includes Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins C & E, BioNymph Peptide, Aloe Vera & Shea Butter - for radiant, healthier-looking skin. Magic Cream is Magic Skin!
Lastly, to help brighten and re-energize the eye area, she used her ring finger to gently apply the Magic Eye Rescue Cream. This incredible gel-cream has stem cell extract that protects and rejuvenates and brightens the eye area!
FACE:
To even out Darren’s complexion and mask any imperfections, she applied Unisex Healthy Glow Hydrating Tint that gives you a healthy, holiday glow in seconds. I followed this with a little Light Wonder Foundation in Shade 5 using the Magic Complexion Brush.
To combat any shine that might come up throughout the night, she used the Powder and Sculpt Brush and applied the Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder in Shade 2 along the T-zone, followed by a light dusting of Charlotte’s Genius Magic Powder in Shade 2 all over the face.
BROWS:
Lastly, she applied a little Legendary Brow Gel in Perfect Brow to keep the brows in place and complete the grooming process.

Gemma’s classy up do was created by her hair stylist, Clariss Rubenstein. We found out how you can rock her hairstyle.
“I started Gemma from dry hair. I first sprayed her hair with water to dampen it so that it would absorb product easily and so I could add a bit of volume with a blow dryer. I ran the Marc Anthony True Professional Dream Big Volume Perfectly Full Thickening Cream perfectly through her hair from root to end and brushed through thoroughly.”
“I sectioned the hair and blow dried the roots using a ceramic blow dryer and round brush. Then, I ran a curling iron through her hair to give it a slight bend. Then I brushed it with a round bristle brush.”
“I sprayed a few puffs of Marc Anthony True Professional Dream Big Volume Volumizing Super Powder at the crown and top of her head.”
“Using only my fingers I secured a ponytail at the back of her head. I then split the ponytail in three and did a messy loose braid. Then I secured the braid into a bun with French hair pins and applied the Marc Anthony True Professional Dream Big Volume Thick & Full Hairspray on my hands to add a bit of texture to the hair around the face.
“I gave the overall look a quick spray with the Marc Anthony True Professional Dream Big Volume Thick & Full Hairspray without taking away some of the great wispy pieces that make the hair look perfectly imperfect.”

As luck would have it, most women seem to experience skin care problems just when they want to look their best. Every woman can relate to waking up with a huge zit right at the tip of her nose, or huge dark circles under the eyes, and the list goes on. There are pre-emptive measure one can take with less than two weeks until the New Year to ward off these skin care evils. We turned to Dr. Manish Shah, a Denver board certified plastic surgeon for guidance on what to do without breaking the bank or having invasive surgery.
Facial Extractions by a licensed aesthetician- Dr. Manish Shah says, “When done correctly extraction facials can clear closed comedones (AKA those tiny, flesh-colored bumps that never come to a head, yet never really go away), remove whiteheads and blackheads, and give your skin a newer, fresher foundation for your skincare products to penetrate. Basically, extractions can be the kiss of life for your lifeless broken out skin.”
Drink Alcohol in Moderation
If you plan on ringing into 2019 with a few glasses of bubbly, Dr. Shah recommends moderating your alcohol consumption leading up to the big day. He explains, “Alcohol can dehydrate the skin and cause it to appear less fresh and vibrant, which can certainly hinder your skin care efforts.”
Cleanse your Face Every Night- You have just arrived home at 2 am from a holiday Party. It may be tempting to flop into bed without washing your face. Don’t do it! Dr. Shah says that, “Sun damage isn’t the only environmental factor you have to worry about. Small micro particles from air pollutants might just hurt your skin, too. Play it safe by remembering to take a minute to cleanse your face to remove debris that could be weakening your skin. In addition, that foundation and pressed powder you have been wearing all night can clog your pores and cause breakouts.”
Start Exfoliating
Want brighter, younger-looking skin? It starts with a great at home exfoliator! Dr. Shah explains that, “As your skin replenishes itself, dead skin cells start to build up on the top layer, leaving you looking dull. Exfoliating regularly removes this layer, revealing fresh, healthy skin. Regular exfoliation also allows your moisturizer and other topical products to penetrate more deeply, making them more effective.”
Clean Your Makeup Brushes
You would not eat food on dirty dishes, would you? Applying makeup with dirty brushes is not so different. Not only will dirty brushes give you a spotty application, but they can harbor bacteria, dirt and oil, leading to acne and breakouts which necessitates piling on even more makeup to cover it up.
Don’t Squeeze Your Pimples!
Here's a secret that many a supermodel or actress use: Steroid shots. Dr. Shah explains that, "when we discuss treating acne with cortisone or "steroid" shots, we are referring to the process of gently placing a very dilute quantity of a "glucocorticoid" steroid into the cyst. Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies and have numerous functions including the regulation of human metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. They have very potent anti-inflammatory effects, so they are often used to treat inflammatory diseases in medicine. They can be formulated as creams to treat skin rashes or as pills to treat systemic disease. They can also be injected directly into local areas of inflammation such as in arthritic joints and inflamed acne cysts. Within one or two days of injection into a cyst, the steroid will shrink the inflammation producing relief of pain and almost immediate cosmetic improvement."
Peels
Look for AHA/BHA/PHA peels that will exfoliate the skin and help release the top layers of dead skin cells allowing for a more radiant underlay to come through.
Microdermabrasion
This professional treatment exfoliates at a deeper level (similar to a peel), with a mechanical handheld device that buffs away the upper layers of the skin.
Add vitamin C to your routine.
Dr. Shah suggests applying several drops of vitamin C serum underneath SPF each morning to target free radical damage, help lighten brown spots, and even out your skin tone.
Moisturizer
It may seem obvious, but when it comes to dewy, glowing skin, moisturizing is essential. "When your skin is dry, it looks dull, so hydrating ingredients can help bring back that glow," says Dr. Shah. For skin types already prone to shine, adding moisture may seem like the last thing you need, but an oil-free hydrator with ingredients like hyaluronic acid could actually help reduce your sebum production and even out slickness into a sleek glow.

Snail slime, otherwise known as snail secretion filtrate (SSF) or snail mucin is naturally created by snails to protect, renew and restore themselves. It has become a popular ingredient in skincare offering great results when used on human skin.
Dr. Andrea Godoy is a Brazilian Dermatologist for former Victoria’s Secret bombshells Alessandra Ambrosio and Ana Beatriz Barros, and Lead Advisor for Brazilian Skin. Their skincare products include snail mucin, among other key ingredients. SSF has six main benefits for the skin and is a powerful anti-aging property, especially at clinical levels. Brazilian Skin extracts the SSF without causing any harm to the mollusk.
1. It optimizes overall skin health.
Packed with zinc, iron, manganese and copper peptides, plus incredibly high quantities of vitamins A and E, snail mucin helps to restore skin and heal it quickly.
Dr. Godoy explains that, “The beneficial ingredients within SSF are plentiful, they include: Allantoin which stimulates skin and regeneration healing, anti-irritation and smoothing actions, proteins which aid in skin nutrition and improving skin texture and luminosity. Snail mucin seals in moisture and allows active ingredients to penetrate the skin. It prevents dryness and makes the skin look dewy, with fewer allergenic ingredients.”
2. It’s a potent way to hydrate skin.
When we consider that 98% of SSF is comprised of water, it is excellent for dry skin which often has wrinkles and fine lines due to dryness.
3. Research shows it has anti-aging potential.
Beyond sealing in moisture, and helping skin to heal, new research has shown SSF may have anti-aging potential, too.
How do skin care companies like Brazilian Skin get the snail mucin from the snail into their products? Dr. Godoy states, “When snails are put under mild stress conditions, they excrete a thick fluid as a means to protect themselves.” When concentrated, this snail mucin aids human skin by hydrating, preventing aging and improving wrinkles and scars.
4. It’s a protection powerhouse.
When looking at ways to protect skin from premature aging, UV rays, pollution, dryness, it’s the copper and antimicrobial peptides along with hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans, and glycoprotein that makes snail mucin such a powerful skin shield.
When you use a serum that includes clinical levels of skin mucin, you’re going to see a difference in the overall appearance of your skin within a few days.
5. It fades scarring and stretch marks.
“There are two key components to snail filtrate that boost tissue repair and promote rapid cell renewal. First are fibrinolytic enzymes which can be thought of as cellular nourishment for the skin. The other is glycolic acid which serves as a natural exfoliant which handles the scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. When you look at these two components plus everything else found in snail filtrate, it’s obvious that it is a powerful ingredient,” Dr. Godoy illustrated.
6. It kills bacteria and blasts acne.
The little snail that could continues to amaze with the ability to kill bacteria that live on the skin’s surface causing acne. “Snail mucin is full of natural antibiotics so when using products with high concentrations of it, skin clears and remains clear with consistent use,” says Dr. Godoy.
With this abundance of naturally occurring benefits for a variety of skincare issues, it’s a no-brainer why snail mucin is more commonly featured as an ingredient in skincare products lately.
What does the research show?
In Brazilian Skin’s research on the benefits, results from a small study with varied ages, both men and women had skin moisturization increase 30-40% after using protelixan and skin elasticity increased by 17%.
While there is limited research on the anti-aging properties of snail mucin, Dr. Godoy believes the addition of SSF in Brazilian Skin products contribute to the drastically amazing results their skincare line achieves, specifically in regard to anti-aging. Along with Dr. Godoy, Wilson Chueire, Founder of Brazilian Skin, also believes this and affirms their Bratoxin formula, which features SSF, increases skin moisture by 54% over 24 hrs.
Product information:
Currently, Brazilian Skin’s regimen comes in the form of a Facelift Kit ($229.00) with three serums: the Age Reversing Bratoxin ® which is the daytime serum, the Triple Cell Complex Acai mask which delivers the best results when worn overnight, and Bratoxinsta ® a more direct wrinkle treatment serum that when applied to deeper wrinkles, radically reduces their appearance within 60 seconds.

It’s holiday time again. Although Thanksgiving has passed, the “booziest” holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s are yet to come.
This post-Thanksgiving period between now and the New Year are when even average people tend to binge drink. What many people don’t realize is that drinking alcohol in excess can have a negative impact on your appearance. Alcohol dehydrates your body including the skin- your body’s largest organ. This happens every time you drink. Extra cocktails can be adding years to your face in the form of wrinkles, poor texture and lack of radiance.
Dr. Stanley Poulos a board-certified San Francisco area plastic surgeon explains that, “frequent alcohol consumption is also thought to deprive the skin of vital vitamins and nutrients. Over time, drinking heavily can have other, more permanent, detrimental effects on your skin. Rosacea, a skin disorder that starts with a tendency to blush and flush easily and can eventually lead to facial disfigurement, is linked to alcohol. Since alcohol increases your blood flow, it often causes blood vessels in your face to dilate (sometimes permanently) and often burst, leaving behind broken capillaries and red spots that are difficult to get rid of,” offers Dr. Poulos.
Here’s a look at what alcohol can do to wreak havoc on your appearance.
Brittle hair.
What's worse, drinking too much doesn't only affect the appearance of your skin; it will dehydrate your hair, making it more prone to breaking and split ends. Weak, brittle hair in addition to premature wrinkling, can easily add 10 years to someone’s appearance.
Dark circles, bloodshot eyes and even blindness.
In much the same way that alcohol causes broken capillaries on your face, it irritates and enlarges the tiny blood vessels on the surface of your eye (the sclera) causing a "bloodshot" appearance. If vanity doesn’t get your attention, how about blindness? “Because excessive drinking robs the body of some nutrients required to maintain eye health, it can lead to a condition called alcoholic optic neuritis, which impairs eyesight and, over time, can result in blindness,” cautions Dr. Poulos.
Some tips to avoid a “skin hangover” include…
1. Stay hydrated.
Aside from giving up booze altogether, Dr. Poulos says it is possible to minimize the unwanted effects of alcohol by constantly staying hydrated. “That means drinking a full glass of water for every cocktail you have. Drink even more water before you go to bed to flush the alcohol out of your system, so you wake up less dehydrated, puffy and flushed,” he advises.
2. Take care of your skin before bed.
Taking care of your skin before hitting the sack is also crucial. Dr. Poulos advises fully washing your face and then applying a moisturizer, like a hydrating serum before getting into bed. “Sleeping with dirty skin makes it prone to clogged pores and acne.”
3. Prop pillows and use tea.
One of the best ways to minimize the eye and face puffiness is to sleep on two pillows, slightly propped up. In the morning, rubbing ice cubes all over your face helps, too. “One of the best ways to deflate eye puffiness and reduce the redness is to place cold tea bags over the eyes. The tannins in the tea help constrict blood vessels,” adds Dr. Poulos.
4. Cover up what you can’t cure.
To camouflage the redness in the face, use a green-tinted primer before applying makeup, which should help neutralize any redness. If you must use foundation, look for a lightweight, moisturizing formula. Avoid powders, as they are often more drying.
5. Consider lasers.
When at-home remedies aren’t making much of a difference. There are pricier measures you can take to minimize the effects of alcohol. “Certain laser treatments can reduce redness and spider veins on the face. It’s important to see someone who is well trained to administer the laser treatment,” suggests Dr. Poulos.
6. Choose your booze wisely.
If you are going to consume alcohol know that different alcohols have different effects on the skin, but as a general rule, the clearer, the better. Vodka, gin, and tequila leave your system quicker. “If you’re going to drink anything, drink vodka that doesn’t have a grain in it, like potato vodka. It’s a lot clearer and smoother, so it gets in and out of your body quickly,” says Dr. Poulos. Most physicians agree that although everyone metabolizes alcohol differently, if you can remember to drink in moderation and stay hydrated, you can save your skin.
7. Reach for Caffeine
Grab an extra-large coffee, then give your skin a little caffeine boost, too. Caffeine helps constrict blood vessels and is a good option after a night of drinking, since alcohol dilates blood vessels. "This can make the area around your eyes look puffy and bloated," explains Dr. Poulos, who recommends keeping an eye cream with caffeine handy.
8. Go for Yogurt
Dr. Poulos advises slathering it on as a face mask and to make sure it’s plain yogurt. Because it's anti-inflammatory, it will help soothe redness, another side effect of drinking too much, especially for those who have rosacea, he notes. Leave it on for five to ten minutes before rinsing.
9. Put Your Face on the Rocks.
“Take the ice cubes out of the freezer, put them in a hand towel and rub them over your face,’ says Dr. Poulos. He suggests doing this to minimize puffiness and swelling. Use cold teaspoons to de-puff around the eye area.

Cosmetic surgery can be life-changing, and its effects go beyond physical. Most do it not only to look more attractive but also to raise self-esteem and gain social acceptance. Because plastic surgery is optional, many people only think about its benefits and believe that it’s a hundred percent safe. This is a misconception. Similar to any other medical procedure, it does have risks.
If you’re thinking about undergoing cosmetic surgery, being aware of the risks as well as the benefits will enable you to make a more informed decision on whether or not it’s the right step to take.
Poor surgery results
The worst thing you could experience is looking worse than you did before the surgery. This is unfortunate, but it does happen. In fact, some plastic surgeons are specialized in fixing botched procedures.
Cosmetic surgery has become a lucrative industry, and some individuals have taken advantage of the demand by passing themselves off as experts even if they are not properly trained and certified. The patients of these so-called specialists usually end up with bad results.
At the onset, make sure that the surgeon you choose has a board certification and has sufficient experience in the particular procedure that you want. Go to this site to learn more about the different kinds of cosmetic surgery procedures.
Scars
Scars develop when damaged skin begins to heal after surgery. What’s unpredictable is how much scarring will occur. Too much of it is unsightly and runs against to your goal of having surgery in the first place.
A skillful surgeon can minimize the appearance of scars, but cannot prevent them altogether. This is because scarring depends on various other factors such as age, genetic predisposition, and depth of incision.
If you’re prone to scarring, you can minimize it by:
● Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes. Alcohol is dehydrating, which is not good for the skin. Smoking, on the other hand, is a dangerous habit that hinders the healing process. Most doctors order their patients to quit smoking two weeks before the operation.
● Eating right. Eat lots of protein like chicken, beef, and dairy, which provides the building blocks for skin and muscle repair.
● Proper incision care. Take steps to ensure that your wound stays free from infection, which prevents it from closing up and prolongs recovery.
Excessive bleeding
Bleeding is normal after a medical procedure, but when it continues afterward, then it becomes an issue. Most cases of excessive bleeding occur due to certain medications. Hypertensive patients are also likely to experience this.
It’s best to consult with your physician first before seeing a cosmetic surgeon, especially if you’re taking maintenance drugs. Some of these may be blood-thinning, which increases the risk of bleeding.
Blot clots or hematoma
Blot clots are the body’s natural defense against bleeding when it’s injured; thus, you might notice some discoloration, swelling, and pain within the wounded area for a week after the surgery.
If the hematoma continues to swell, this might be a cause for concern. Blood circulation in the wound area is likely hindered, cutting oxygen supply. This will lead to inflammation and numbness, and even skin death if left untreated.
Another dangerous consequence of hematoma is when a clot reenters the bloodstream and blocks a vital artery in the lungs and heart. In this case, you will need immediate medical attention.
The risk of forming blood clots is low, but you can still benefit from it by applying these post-surgery preventive measures:
● Drink eight glasses of water every day. This will keep you adequately hydrated so that your blood platelets are less likely to clump together and start clotting.
● When lying down, prop your lower extremities with pillows to elevate them at a level above the heart. The reason for doing this is to stimulate blood flow all over the body.
● Don’t stay in a single position for too long. Doing so can cause blood to collect at the ankles, where clots can form. Even if you’re experiencing post-surgery tiredness, try to move around after the operation.
Reactions to anesthesia
Anesthesia-related issues are rare but are severe when they occur. Sometimes, they can even result in patient’s death. Risks from anesthesia include allergic reactions, respiratory problems, coma, and cardiac arrest. Some patients feel nauseous as an after-effect of anesthetics.
Even if these issues have very minimal chances of occuring, you should take steps to avoid them.
● If the procedure requires you to have general anesthesia, make sure that the anesthesiologist handling your care is board certified.
● Talk to the surgeon and anesthesiologist about your medical history so that adjustments can be made on protocols and medicines. If you are requested to stop using a drug or a product, you have to comply for the sake of your health and safety.
● Quit smoking since it raises surgical risks.
● Adhere to any post-surgery instructions that your doctor recommends.
Going through cosmetic surgery is a big decision, and its results can affect you for the rest of your life. It has rewards, but there are also risks. Do your research and consider all the pros and cons carefully. Being an informed patient helps ensure that you get some gain from the pain.
